At the 2005 Mid-Winter Electrics in San Diego, Daniel Schübeler introduced his company's new BAE Hawk, an all-composite model, featuring honey-comb construction in the wings and horizontal stabilizer. Schübeler's meticulous attention to detail, known from his ducted fan units, is evident in this model. Aside from enlarged intakes for optimal fan performance and efficiency, the Hawk is exactly 1/8th scale. Kits will be available either with flaps and retracts or without. They will be very complete and ready for RC gear and drive train installation. This EDF jet owes its existence to Swiss pilot Benedikt von Arx. He scratch-built the initial model, and he also has a pre-production moulded version. In Schübeler, he found the ideal manufacturer "his" plane. The BAE Hawk we are presenting on this page was originally developed by Benedikt von Arx. He designed a beautiful semi-scale model for our 90 mm ducted fan DS-51-DIA 3-ph. For this model we produced CNC-milled plug for wing and ailerons. We now have a complete set of moulds ready for production. The surface of our Hawk shows many details like all big rivets and panel lines. Proportions have been copied true to original (except for intakes and nozzle diameter). The model’s construction is of very high quality. Wing and stabs are built as 100 % honeycomb sandwich, the fuselage consists of a multilayer laminate made of aircraft-grade glass cloth. The result is an extraordinary lightweight model with excellent flight qualities The Hawk is easy to fly and optimally suited for beginners in jet-flying – even though it reaches top speed of more than 200 km/h. The original’s jet-acrobatic flying can easily be imitated. We recommend a drive system of the 8S-class for this model, ideal being e.g. our DS-51-DIA HDT with a Lehner 1940-12 HA and 8 LIPO-batteries. The model is controlled by the following functions: elevator, aileron, rudder, flaps and throttle. All preparations for installation of a retractable landing gear are done. We are offering two different landing gears made of wire legs based on the original’s geometry or made of aluminium cast parts, already coated in original colours. Cooling airflow has been optimized (as for all new HDT ducted fans) by an enlarged opening of the streamlined fairing. The optionally available Secure Fan Fix System enables exact installation within the fuselage. All ducted fans of the DS-XX-DIA HDT series come fully assembled, fine-balanced and quality-checked, you simply have to install your motor and the system is ready to fly. The aircraft has exceptional performance! The MW-54 engine is a perfect match for this aircraft. The photo below shows the installation of 3 Sullivan 16 oz. fuel tanks with gasoline stoppers, Wren MW-54, and brake valve with brake actuator servo (linked to down elevator). A fourth tank has been installed at the top of the inlet between the tanks directly forward of the turbine, providing a total of 64 oz. of fuel. The lower two photos show front and back of the stainless steel/titanium double-walled augmenter tube. The dry weight of the aircraft with the turbine installation is 12 lbs, only 1/2 lb heavier than the ducted fan installation. Only an additional 1.5 oz of nose weight was required for balancing. Weighing in at 12 lbs dry, carrying 64 oz of fuel, the aircraft flys at around 170 mph in level flight but still slows down and settles beautifully on landings. The installation is very simple and can be completed in a matter of hours. A laser cut wood installation kit and instructions will be available shortly.
